Ultrasound is a procedure used to look at internal organs without having to do a surgical procedure.  It is done without the use of anesthetic and only takes minutes to perform.

This is an Ultrasound machine.  It includes a computerized system with different size probes and also has a photo quality printer.  The pet is shaved usually from the rib cage to the back legs and up to the rib cage on the side.  A jelly-like substance is applied and the probe is pressed over the area which sends sound waves to the abdominal cavity to show the tissues and organs.

To the right is an Ultrasound of a pregnant German Shorthair Pointer with one puppy.  Ultrasound can be used for detecting pregnancy just like in human medicine!

We usually use the ultrasound to view kidneys, bladder, as well as other organs.  We can even collect a urine sample by locating the bladder using the ultrasound image to direct the needle.  The pet is awake and only feels a slight needle prick.  This way a sterile sample is collected for the most accurate test results!
